New leadership for an

affordable New Orleans

KEY ISSUES:

AFFORDABLE HOUSING & EQUITY â€‹

FAIR & UNDERSTANDABLE TAXES

COLLABORATION & TRANSPARENCY

AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND EQUITY

New Orleanians deserve fair treatment in housing—whether they rent or own—so they can afford to live in safe, healthy neighborhoods across our city.

Casius will work to:

  • Prevent short-term rentals from driving up home assessments.

  • Support first-time homebuyers and make it easier to stay in Orleans Parish.

  • Explore renter tax credits to ease the burden of rising housing costs.

  • Ensure that pursuing lower insurance premiums doesn’t mean a bigger tax bill — especially for families investing in resilience with the City’s Fortified Roof Program.

FAIR AND UNDERSTANDABLE TAXES

The assessment process should be consistent, easy to follow, and fair to everyone—no matter where they live or when they bought their home.

Casius will work to:

  • End unfair assessment practices that increase taxes for homebuyers with 13-15% higher assessments than their neighbors.

  • Make the assessment office proactive and accessible to everyday residents.

  • Give every property owner a clear explanation of how their assessment was calculated — including neighborhood trends.

  • Keep assessments fair and predictable, so homeowners aren’t priced out of their neighborhoods.

COLLABORATION AND TRANSPARENCY

The Assessor’s Office should be open, accountable, and work hand-in-hand with the community to get assessments right.

Casius will work to:

  • Publish an annual report on commercial tax breaks city officials and decision-makers to guide better policy decisions.

  • Partner with community leaders and other elected officials to build trust and increase effectiveness.

  • Reduce the paperwork burden on small businesses by promoting a minimum threshold for reporting personal property.

What does the
Tax Assessor do?

The Assessor's Office is responsible to ensure taxes are fair and equitable when compared to similar properties.

The Assessor's Office does not set tax rates.

The Assessor can enable access to data and research to inform debates on key local economic development issues.

Tax Assessor is an elected position, but it should not be a political position.
